Sizzle Ring
Sizzle Ring
This is a round (well, okay, it's octagonal) rain stick.
I've played parts that call for a continuous rain stick
sound, and couldn't figure out how to do it. In
addition, trying to twirl around a 6-foot stick in a
crowded orchestra pit can be problematic! It turns
out that Meinl actually makes a very nice version of
this - but at $150 - $160 last time I checked. It's a
very nice instrument, but why not build one of your
own for as little as a quarter of that? You can order
just the plans, the center hub & bungees, pipe &
cement, a ready-to-assemble kit - or, if you're
REALLY impatient, a fully assembled version (BTW,
plans are included when you order pieces and parts).
Tools Needed:
Basic: Drill, Saws for wood and aluminum,
ruler/straightedge, measuring cup, paint or stain (if
desired)
Suggested: drill guide, miter box or saw.
Level of Difficulty: Basic tool skills - requires
reasonably precise measurements, straight saw cuts in
wood and ABS, drilling in wood.
Note: If your local plumbing code does not allow ABS
pipe, it might be hard to find it in your area. If that's
the case, save yourself some frustration and order
the pipe kit or the full kit.

Round Chimes
This is a plan for a basic 33-bar mark tree using 3/8"
rods, ranging from 4" to 8" long. The plans are based
on round solid aluminum rods, but any metal of the
right size could be used - solid rods or tubes,
aluminum, brass, or bronze!
Tools Needed:
Basic: Drill, Wood saw, ruler/straightedge, paint or
stain (if desired)
Suggested: drill guide, miter box or saw.
Level of Difficulty: intermediate tool skills - requires
precise measurements, straight saw cuts in wood and
aluminum, drilling in wood and aluminum.
Sorry, but I've costed it out and can't sell a round
chimes kit for low enough to make it worth it to the
customer. However, if you'd really like to assemble
your own, but skip the cutting and drilling, send me an
email at orders@spudpercussion.com.
Rectangular Chimes
This is a plan for a set of chimes using 3/4" wide
rectangular bars instead of round rods. The sound is
intentionally "clunkier" than the round-rod version,
more like real wind chimes. Like the round version,
these are based on aluminum, but any metal of the
right size could be used - aluminum, brass, bronze, or
anything else!
Tools Needed:
Basic: Drill, Saws for wood and aluminum,
ruler/straightedge, paint or stain (if desired)
Suggested: drill guide, miter box or saw.
Level of Difficulty: intermediate tool skills - requires
precise measurements, straight saw cuts in wood and
aluminum, drilling in wood and aluminum.
I can do custom plans if you have something different in mind - different
widths, for example. Email me at questions@spudpercussion.com with your idea.
Note: Orders received before 4:00 Mountain Time are typically shipped the
next business day.
If you can't find rods or bars for your
kit locally, try Online Metals. They also
have lots of different sizes and other
materials if you want to experiment!
